- Chapter 7 - It's when you're on the run that you have to stay strong. Let's have a hot cup of coffee.
“-Hmmm, didn’t you know that you can breathe underwater with the elves?
Surprisingly, you don’t seem to know everything either, John.”
We continued to swim considerably and were swept downstream quite a bit.
When the current of the river became slower, I appeared above the surface of the water, for a while.
…… I still can’t believe it. I was underwater for quite a while and I am still breathing.
“What does that mean? I still don’t understand.
Why is it that when you’re at the water’s edge you drink water, but in the water, you can breathe?”
Hahaha, don’t try to explore the boundaries of power too much or you’ll get hurt, okay?”
Watching Sylphy as she swept ahead saying that, I could tell that she was really good at swimming.
“I’ve heard that elves are water-tolerant, but is that what this is about? This is…”
“Yes. In the first place, elves can breathe in water. They are the children of the water god.
And if you are an elf priest, you can give the same blessing to anyone you touch.”
…I had heard that Sylphy was a witch, but I wonder if she is a priestess.
I am hesitant to ask because it seems a little impolite, but I am also a bit hazy on not asking the question.
“Hey, Sylphy. Are you a witch? Or a priestess?”
“Hmmm, you’re not very well informed if you think there’s a difference.”
“That’s quite a statement. Is a witch the same as a priestess?”
Sylphy nods to my words.
“Good of you to be so perceptive. Yes, the root of witches and magic is the same quality as that of a priestess.
Every human, dwarf, and elf who is found by God is called a priest.
The art of advancing that power to a unique form is called magic.”
There is a foundation called priesthood, and then you change it for your own use and call it magic.
“So is it a bad word?”
“Uhm yes, but at the same time, it’s a compliment.
It means that you are at least a little bit different from the average priest.”
She said that if you don’t use enough magic to be recognized as unique, you can’t call it magic yet.
“Well, many people mock all priests of other races by calling them wizards and witches.”
“So, if you’re an elf or dwarf priestess, they call you a witch.”
“That’s what it means. But I am an elf worthy of being called a witch.”
Sylphy smiles fearlessly as she leans into the river current.
…So this guy is quite fond of the nickname ‘Sylph the Witch’.
But I have a feeling she gets angry when I call her ‘Sylph the Witch’. Somehow.
“I’m glad to hear that. I feel safe with the witch.”
“Well, you’ll get a chance to be more grateful.”
Sylphy laughs and grabs my hand.
“We’re going up, John. If we go up here, we’re close to town.”
“…You know this place?”
“I’ve lived here longer than five hundred years. I know most of it.”
As I climb out of the riverbank and onto land, I realize once again that I am soaking wet.
I wonder if I will be dry by the time I reach the city. I don’t want to go into the city like this.
“Let’s dry ourselves off.”
As soon as Sylphy pointed to the sun, light flashed around and the wind blew at the same time.
In a few seconds, our clothes were completely dry.
“….what did you do, now?”
“I concentrated the reflection of sunlight, enhanced the blowing wind, and manipulated the position of the water.”
“All this in a single moment?”
Sylphy nodded her head in agreement.
…Thanks, this seems to be a seriously extraordinary witch.
Who uses 3 magics at the same time just to dry clothes? Ordinarily.
“Now you won’t be embarrassed when you go into town, will you?”
I walk half a step behind Sylphy, who smiles, and enter a hotel.
It looks quite expensive, but I wonder if it is safe.
“It’s been a long time, Sylphina-san. Are you staying with us today?”
No, I’ll have a light coffee…no, wait. John, do you have enough to eat for the middle of the night?”
Sylphy, who had been chatting with a familiar hotelier, suddenly turns to me.
She is young in appearance, but when I see her talking to others like this, I realize she is older.
“..not enough.”
“That’s what I thought. Can we just have a meal for now?”
“Of course. But only the terrace table is available, is that all right?”
Sylphy nodded to the hotelier’s question.
“Sitting outside is fine, but hot coffee before dinner please. I just went for a quick swim.”
“Sylphina, you’re still the same.”
I sit down on the terrace of an upscale-looking hotel with her, who is completely used to it.
It’s a different world even though we just walked up from the riverside.
“I’ve never been in a restaurant that looks this expensive… Well, I don’t remember.”
“Hmmm…I’ve been to some of the finest hotels in the Empire…”
Watching Sylphy laugh like that was a bit of a distraction.
I have that problem with amnesia, but, well, the current situation is not so bad.
“But will they come after us?”
“…It’s a downstream city. They’ll probably find out. We can’t stay long.”
When she answers that, the waiter brings her a cup of hot coffee.
I am thankful for my body which has been in the water for a long time and has become cold.
No matter how sunny it is, I am cold to the core.
“It’s when you’re on the run that you have to stay strong. Let’s have a hot cup of coffee.”
I sipped the coffee, wondering if that was how it was supposed to be.
I have no memory of drinking something hot, but it feels nostalgic.
“…it feels calming, doesn’t it?”
“Right? It’s one of the happiest times of my life.
It’s not too late to think about the future after all this.”
