- Chapter 12 - I am Chloe Sargent, and you are my last patient.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. You are the one who has been working with that lady, Sylphina, right?!”
I entered the church hospital, went through the reception desk, and was shown to the hospital room.
The actual doctor came to the room without a hitch.
“I’m John. You must be very young, doctor.”
“The number of medical priests decreased after the 14-year war.
If you just need a normal doctor, there are plenty of veteran doctors out there who are better than me.”
14 years of war. I’ve heard a brief overview of it from Sylphy.
It was a war of territorial expansion conducted by the Machine Empire.
It was waged against the human, dwarf, and orc nations, with the human nation being the most persistent.
“Sylphy asked me to see a medical priest.”
“Yes. Thanks to you, my retirement has been extended.”
“Are you planning to leave the church hospital…?”
Looking at her unique pink-gold hair and eyes, you can clearly see that she is a priestess.
It’s different from Sylphy’s color, but it has that kind of power.
The clothes she wears are also those of a prestigious priestess, although I have no knowledge of this.
“Yes, I’d like to take some time off to look for my missing brother.
So I am Chloe Sargent, and you are my last patient.”
I see, her name is Chloe.
“I heard that you have amnesia, and since you asked for a priest, let’s start from the beginning in the priestly way, shall we? For now, could you please take off your jacket?”
What does being a priest have to do with taking off my jacket?
Thinking this, I took off my jacket.
“Excuse me, I correct myself. Please remove your shirt too.”
“What? Why…?”
“It’s a medical necessity. I’m sorry I’m not a doctor of the same sex.”
Well, I am not a woman, and I am not ashamed of taking off my clothes in front of the opposite sex, but I was asked to undress from the beginning. I wonder what kind of medical examination I am going to receive.
“I don’t have a problem with being naked, but why on earth?”
“Well, I’m going to put your head in this thing, and if you’re wearing clothes, you’re going to get wet.”
So Dr. Chloe had prepared a uniquely shaped water bucket.
It was connected to the bed, and if you lay down, you could put your head in it.
The water volume seemed a little low, but perhaps it would be just right if you put your head in it.
“… why is there a water bucket…?”
“Hmmm, is this the first time you’ve been examined by a priest, John?”
“I’ve never seen a priest before. Although I think I may have had one before my amnesia.”
“Well, let’s take a look at that now, shall we?”
Dr. Chloe smiles gently and slowly guides me to the water.
Then I put my head into the water.
Please wait a moment.”
Dr. Chloe quickly gets up and closes the curtains.
As she leaves, I become aware of the coldness of the water.
…Being in the water like this reminds me of jumping into the river with Sylphy.
“Keep breathing slowly.”
Dr. Chloe, who has returned before I know it, touches my shoulder.
I feel my breathing fall into the rhythm of her stroking.
“Slowly, slowly, slowly….”
My consciousness slowly becomes blurry.
It was as if the curtains had been closed and a light was shining in a room that was supposed to be dark.
“Relax. John.”
The doctor’s last words and consciousness falls away. And then…
“…. are you awake? John.”
“Oh, ooh… I guess I’m still in the water.”
“Yeah, I’m going to go in for a medical examination now.”
I can see light flooding out from behind me.
What on earth is this?
“Don’t turn around, John.”
“But, but what in the world is this light….?”
“Uhm, elves are blessed by the water god. Humans are light.”
I see… She is already using her power as a medical priest.
How mysterious.
“Well then, John. I’m going to ask you a few questions.
First, what is the earliest memory you can remember?”
The doctor’s words remind me of the words of the commander.
“I will tell you what the mission is. Your mission is to burn the elf village and kill the terrorist leader, Sylphina Bloommarin.”
“… I see. Imperial thought transmission.”
“Are you seeing this? You see what I’m thinking?”
“Yeah, if there’s something you don’t want me to know, just lift your head out of the water.”
That’s outrageous, the power of human priests.
It’s hard to draw the line between what shouldn’t be known and what should be known.
I wish Sylphy were here to pull me up when I need it.
“What about the name John?”
Her question reflexively reminds me of my conversation with Sylphy.
She said that we need a name that is not the role of a brave man.
“I see, so it’s anonymous John, isn’t it? What about your surname”
“Oh, I don’t care if it’s John Smith or John Doe, I’m fine with anything”
“I hope you can remember your real name, John.”
From there, Dr. Chloe asked a series of questions.
Surprisingly, however, she did not ask me what Sylphy and I were traveling for.
I think she was somehow concerned about us.
“Ok, well then, wipe your head with this and wait a moment.”
The doctor leaves the examination room after giving me a towel.
I guess this is the. end of the examination itself.
I hope there is some kind of medical treatment.
“But I can’t stay long, can I?…”
Even if we find a cure, the doctor will retire and Sylphy and I won’t be able to stay long. We will have to move from place to place. I hope it doesn’t end up with me having to go back to the hospital.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, John.”
