“Just one bite and you’ll be thrilled ♪ Exciting Waku Burger ♪“
– The trading city of Addingiru.
This is a city where trade with the Machine Empire is flourishing, which is rare in a human country.
It is said that the city has been trading with the empire already before the ’14 Years War’.
“Just one bite and you’ll be thrilled ♪ Exciting Waku Burger ♪“
The city is different from the first city we stopped by, as it is a city that has built a huge fortune through trade with the empire. It feels similar to the landscape of the machine empire that I know as information, though I have no detailed memory of it.
“Hey, Sylphy!”
“What’s up? You still want the Mega-Waku one? I want the big one.”
“No…, I’m fine with the Cheese-Waku.”
A few days after entering Addingiru.
I had come to “Waku Waku Burger” for breakfast with Sylphy.
I knew about it. It is the largest hamburger chain in the empire.
“You have to eat a lot to get big.”
“No, I’m already bigger than you. It won’t make any difference now.”
“I’m sure that’s true. So, is there something you want to ask me?”
I had forgotten all about it because I had been distracted by the conversation.
“So what is this strange music that’s been playing?
-One bite and you’ll be thrilled-.”
“It’s all about excitement. In fact, if you eat it, you will be overflowing with excitement.”
Looks like Sylphy has been through it all, Waku Hamburgers.
“No, they sing at the same tempo all the time in a place like this. I was wondering if they don’t get tired.”
“Hmmm, you really think so, Joh?.”
“No? I thought it sounded too much like a human being.”
Sylphy giggles when she hears my words.
“Apparently, you were never taught the art of recording.”
“Recording? Aah…. a bit of espionage in the art of recording sound.”
It’s not only for espionage. It can also be used in this way.”
“Hmmm….. So you mean it’s not just listening in and keeping the evidence?”
“So the bizarre singing voice was recorded elsewhere and keeps playing over again and again.”
“That’s right. Maybe it was recorded by the machine empire.”
I see…. one bite and you’ll be thrilled.
It’s music that strangely sticks in my head. I guess this is the kind of thing that leaves a lasting impression.
“Sorry to keep you waiting. Here are the Mega-Waku and Cheese-Waku. Please enjoy.”
The waiter who brought it to me left without hesitation, leaving the Mega-Waku for me and the Cheese-Waku for Sylphy.
“……he needs to be educated.”
“Don’t do it, don’t do it. That’s what everyone thinks.”
“Uhmmm…. is it bad manners for us to get angry at a cheap restaurant?”
Anyone who compares me to a thin, small elf girl can’t help but think I’d eat a Mega-Waku. Even so, my body is muscular enough to be trained as an imperial soldier.
“Oops, my bad. John.”
“No, let’s eat and get excited, shall we?”
Swap out the Cheese-Waku set for the Mega-Waku set.
The hot fries are delicious.
“This black soda is a good taste, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it’s always the same sweetness, which is an art in itself.”
“…saying this, Sylphy….”
I was watching her unwrap the Mega-Waku and trying to get it to her mouth, it’s really big. The Mega-Waku-Burger is about the size of Sylphy’s face.
“…. what is it? John.”
“…No, this is what the commander said, but you say that elves are naturally inclined. That’s why they’re against internal body nanomachines.”
No, I wonder if this story itself was completely bullshit in the first place.
It is true that many people think that way.
“It’s rare, though, for elves to get involved in the conversation of other races. I’m the only one who does.”
“As an elf, are you sure you don’t want something like the Waku-Burger?”
I don’t know what it is, this consistent taste, but I know it’s different from the sandwiches I’ve had before. I can intuitively understand that it has been equalized in some way.
“Chemical seasonings, preservatives, coloring agents, well, they’re all used in food. I know what you mean.”
Sylphy is munching on a piece of Mega-Waku while saying so.
Her face is full of smiles and it looks really delicious.
I think it’s completely different from my Cheese-Waku.
“But, John. Elf, dwarf, human, all history is a history of control.”
“What do you mean…?”
“We, the human race, have stabilized our lives by dominating nature.”
Controlling nature, huh?
“For example, John. What do you think the dangers are in eating plants and animals of an unknown nature?”
“Like not knowing if it’s safe to eat in the first place?”
“Yes. But I know it’s not safe to eat because someone already died eating it.”
-What people have told and passed on is a mass of such rules of experience.
Those words of Sylphy echo heavily.
“And along with the danger of the unknown, there is also the matter of time.
Hunting for animals and gathering plants are both time-consuming and unstable.
To shorten and stabilize them, people began to raise livestock and to farm.”
Sylphy eats more Mega-Waku with a grin on her face.
There is still a lot left, even after all that chewing.
“This is the history of a tribe that rules over nature.
There is no human race that is not a naturalist, that has not really processed nature.
Naturally, we elves are no exception.”
…. I see.
It is certainly logical to think of livestock farming and agriculture as the processing of nature and domination over nature.
It is the domination of nature for a better future for human beings. That is what people do.
“The hamburger is the crystallization of human history.
It is the ultimate form of natural domination. You can have the same taste everywhere.”
Hmmm. When I hear that, I feel like I’m eating something extraordinary, even if it’s just a casual Cheese-Waku.
“But what if these chemical seasonings are toxic to the human body?”
“… in this case, I myself will only become a cornerstone of history.
Like our great pioneers who died eating what they couldn’t eat.”
